You Don’t Need to Report Your Medical Card to the DMV Anymore

If you’re a CDL driver, this is one less headache: your DOT medical card is now reported electronically by the certified medical examiner. Here’s what that means for you.

For years, drivers were told to take their DOT medical card to the DMV (or upload/send it) to keep their CDL medical status up to date. Now the process is simpler: your DOT medical card is reported by the medical examiner through an electronic system.

Bottom line: After your DOT physical, you typically do not need to make a separate trip to the DMV just to “turn in” your medical card. The examiner submits it for you.

What changed?

Certified medical examiners (CMEs) can submit your exam results electronically. Once submitted, the information is routed to the appropriate agencies so your CDL medical certification stays current.

That means less paperwork for you — and fewer delays caused by lost faxes, missed uploads, or long DMV lines.

What you should do after your DOT physical

  • Keep your paper copy. Even though reporting is electronic, always keep your card for your records and for your employer if needed.
  • Ask when it will be submitted. Most clinics submit quickly, but processing can still take a short window to update in state systems.
  • Make sure your info is correct. Your name, DOB, and license details must match what the state has on file.
  • Don’t wait until the last minute. Renew early so you’re not stressing if there’s a delay.

Do I ever still need to contact the DMV?

Sometimes, yes — but usually only if something doesn’t update correctly. If your CDL shows a downgrade risk, a “medical status” issue, or your employer says your status isn’t showing, contact the clinic first so we can confirm the submission.

Common reasons there’s a delay

  • Information mismatch (name, DOB, license number)
  • System processing time (updates may not be instant)
  • Card expiration is too close and the system flags it
Tip: If your card is close to expiring, schedule your DOT physical early to avoid any interruptions to your driving status.
