Can’t Get My Medical Card Updated Through FMCSA? Here’s What to Do
If your DOT medical card isn’t showing up with your state yet, you’re not alone. Many states are dealing with delays pulling updates from the National Registry. Here’s how to handle it and protect yourself during this transition.
We’re hearing the same concern from drivers across the country: “I passed my DOT physical, but my state still shows my medical card isn’t updated.”
First — take a breath. You didn’t do anything wrong. Right now, a lot of states are having issues processing medical certification updates through the systems that connect to the FMCSA National Registry.
Why this is happening
In many states, the CDL system “downloads” medical certification information from the National Registry. When those systems are slow, syncing, or backed up, your update may not show immediately — even though your medical examiner completed everything correctly.
What you should do next
-
Keep your hard copy medical card with you.
Until your state system updates, carry your paper Medical Examiner’s Certificate (and any supporting paperwork you were given). Keep a photo on your phone too. -
Contact your state CDL help line.
Your state’s CDL/medical certification unit can often “pull” or “download” your updated medical card from the National Registry on their side. -
Be patient — and call early in the day if possible.
Many state CDL help desks are overwhelmed right now. Expect longer hold times and slower callbacks.
What to say when you call the state CDL help desk
Here’s a simple script:
Should I keep driving?
We can’t give legal advice for every situation, and rules/requirements can vary by state and by employer policy. But during this rough transition period, the most important thing is: carry your valid hard copy medical card and work with your state CDL help desk to get the update posted.
How long will it take?
It depends on the state and their current backlog. Some updates happen quickly; others take longer. The biggest thing we’re seeing: drivers everywhere are dealing with this, and many state help desks are simply overwhelmed.
